If you get in front of the football, your plant foot will be too far in front of the ball which will result in your kicking leg striking the football before it has finished it's down swing. This means your kicking leg is behind your plant leg at the point of contact with the football.

If you kick the football with the proper approach, your foot will be properly aligned with the ball and your will kick the football the moment your kicking leg is finished with the downswing and the upswing will start as you kick through the ball.
